January 31, 2009 - San Francisco, CA
This weekend's race was in beautiful San Francisco. Thankfully the weather was perfect for the race. Practice started out pretty well other than Chad Reed over shooting the triple sending himself and Josh Grant to the dirt. (both riders were OK) The rest of practice went well minus a few small crashes, the track seemed to be on the fast side this weekend. The opening ceremony was fun with lots of flashes and explosions and some entertainment from a little know rock star named James "Bon Jovi" Stewart. It looks like the last few races have given James the confidence he needs to have some fun out there.
The first heat race had #114 Justin Brayton winning, followed by Ryan Morais, and Cole Seely. Heat #2 was Jake Weimer, Ryan Dungey, Sean Collier taking the top three. In the last chance qualifier it was all Chris Blose and Adam Chatfield in the lites. In the big bike class heat #1 was Josh Grant, Josh Hill, and Ivan Tedesco. Second heat was James Stewart, Andrew Short, and Mike Alessi. Davi Millsaps and Heath Voss just made it into the main event via L.C.Q. The big story of the night was both Tim Ferry and Nick Wey not making it into the main event and Jason Lawrence out sick. Ferry had some problems in his heat race, and went down in the L.C.Q.
The main event went almost as planed. Jake Weimer got off to a great start and was stalked by Ryan Dungey. Dungey set his sights on Weimer early and showed
some great speed. Ryan reeled him in and made a mistake trying to take the lead with a block pass but went down. By the time he got back up and on his bike he had to much time to make up. So Jake Weimer won his second race of the year. Ryan Dungey made it back to 2nd with Trey Canard, Justin Brayton, and Ryan Morais finishing the top five.
Now for the big boys. If you are like me, you are waiting for the next great battle between Stewart and Reed, well you're going to have to wait at leatst one more week. Mike Alessi threatend to take the holeshot but was passed by Stewart before the line. From that point on it was all Bubba. Chad Reed did a good job of getting into second. I feel Ryan Villopoto was the most improved rider this week sticking to Reed after being passed by him. So it was Stewart, Reed, Villopoto, Josh Grant, and Andrew Short in the top five. Next we head to Anaheim for the sixth round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross season. The MX Lab will see you there.
