February 7, 2009 - Anaheim 3

Anaheim 3The gods must love a good race. This weeks race was in Not so sunny California. Anaheim to be exact. It was raining enough through out the day to delay practice until about an hour before the opening ceremony. The track was maintained well and was covered with plastic until about 5:00. Thankfully the rain slowed down enough to get the plastic off and the track ready for practice. Josh Grant

The track was designed by supercross great Jeremy McGrath. It was probably one of the most technical tracks I have seen in long time. It would have been a tough track even in the best conditions. Add a little bit of rain and you can count on some serious carnage. With the practice schedule cut to 1 ten minute ride for each set of riders. It made it difficult for some of the younger riders and privateers to qualify.

The qualifying races went pretty uneventful. Chris Blose had a great start, and was chased by Ryan Dungey for the first half of the race, before making a small mistake around a sloppy muddy corner. After he slid out he was able to get back on the track without loosing any positions. So the first heat race went to Ryan Dungey, followed by Chris Blose, and Dan Reaerdon. The second heat race was all about the Pro-Circuit racing team, as Jake Weimer took the win with his teammate Ryan Morais following close by. A very impressive Tyler Brayton took Third. The supercross class qualifying was a little out of control In the end it was Davi Millsaps with one of his best heat races of the this year, followed by Chad reed, and Andrew Short. In heat number two, James Stewart took all the glory, with Josh Grant, and Ivan Tadesco not far behind. The big story Ryan Villopoto crashing in the same spot in both his heat race and the L.C.Q., not qualifying for the main event.

The main event went great. The track held up well. Tyler Brayton got the hole-shot, and held his own for the first few laps before Jake Weimer showed him a wheel. The next couple of laps Weimer and James StewartBrayton battled for the lead before Weimer got control of the lead. The last person to pass Brayton was Ryan Morais. Points leader Ryan Dungey had a bad start, as he went down at the first corner. With a last place start Dungey had his work cut out for him. Riding like a mad man he did what he could to salvage points for the championship and finished in a respectable fourth place. So with out the rain on a muddy track Jake Weimer gets his third race win as he takes the series points lead from Ryan Dungey. Ryan Morais finished second, followed by Justin Brayton, and Ryan Dungey.

The supercross class main event went a little different. Jake WeimerThe beginning of the race started the way it often does with James Stewart taking the hole-shot. Once again Chad Reed did not get the start he was looking for and had to charge his way forward to salvage as many points as he could to keep the championship in site. As Reed was riding like a man possessed trying catch Stewart, the sky opened up, and the rain everyone was waiting for finally came down. For eight laps the rain came down Jake Weimerhard making a difficult track even more so. When the wet checkered flag came down once again James Stewart was the one in front with Chad Reed finishing a respectable second and with his best race of the season Davi Millsaps finished in third winning a great race over Ivan Tadesco who finished fourth. So all in all things went as good as they could have gone. Even with the rain and a little bit of a sloppy track. The racing and level of competition was great. Well that concludes round six of the A.M.A. Supercross series. Next stop is just south in San Diego. Lets hope we can keep the dirt dry for one more night.
