Your First Track Day: What to Bring, What to Expect

Heading to a motocross track for the first time can feel intimidating. It doesn't have to be. Here's what you need to know before you load up the truck.

What to Bring

Your bike (obviously), helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, chest protector, knee guards or braces, jersey and pants. Beyond gear: water, a cooler with food, basic tools, spare levers, tie-downs, a canopy if you have one, and a chair. You'll be glad you brought the chair.

What to Expect

Most tracks run practice days during the week and races on weekends. For your first visit, go on a practice day. You'll sign a waiver, pay a gate fee (usually $20-40), and pick a class or session to ride in. Beginner sessions are slower-paced and less crowded.

Track Etiquette

Stay predictable. Hold your line. Don't stop on the face of a jump. If you crash, get off the track as fast as you can. If you're slower than the riders around you, don't swerve — let faster riders go around you. They can see you; just be consistent.

After the Ride

Wash your bike. Check your air filter. Look over your controls, chain, and tires. A 20-minute post-ride check can save you hours of headaches at your next ride.

Track days are where you get better. The more laps you put in, the more comfortable you get. Don't worry about speed at first — focus on form and consistency.
