Helmet Buyer's Guide: What Actually Matters

There are dozens of helmets on the market and every brand claims theirs is the best. Here's what actually matters when you're spending your money.

Fit Comes First

A helmet that doesn't fit right is a helmet that won't protect you. Period. Every brand fits different head shapes. Try them on. Oval heads, round heads — there's no universal "best helmet," only the best one for your head.

Certifications That Matter

Look for DOT and ECE certifications at minimum. Snell is a bonus. MIPS or similar rotational impact systems are increasingly standard and worth having. Don't buy a helmet without at least DOT/ECE.

Weight vs Protection

Lighter helmets are more comfortable over long motos, but don't sacrifice protection for a few grams. Carbon fiber lids are nice but a well-built composite shell at half the price does the job for most riders.

What to Skip

Don't pay extra for graphics. Don't buy a helmet just because your favorite rider wears it. Don't buy used helmets. And replace any helmet that takes a significant impact, even if it looks fine on the outside.

Budget Picks

You can get a solid, certified helmet for under $200. You don't need to spend $600 to be safe. Spend what you can, but don't ride without one.
