You don't need to spend thousands to gear up properly. But there are things you absolutely cannot skip. Here's the list.
Non-Negotiable
Helmet (DOT/ECE certified), goggles, gloves, boots (actual MX boots, not work boots), chest protector, and knee protection. That's the minimum. Everything else is a bonus.
Why MX-Specific Gear Matters
Regular boots won't protect your ankles from a 250-pound bike landing on them. Regular gloves won't give you the grip you need when your hands are sweating. MX gear is built for impacts, heat, and abuse that normal clothing can't handle.
Where to Save
Jersey and pants are mostly about comfort and style — you can go budget here. Gloves wear out fast so don't overspend. Goggles in the $30-50 range work fine for most riders.
Where to Spend
Helmet. Always. This is not the place to cut corners. Boots are second — good boots prevent the most common dirtbike injuries. Knee braces if you can afford them.
Buy Used Carefully
Used boots and body armor can be fine if they're in good shape. Never buy a used helmet. You don't know its impact history.
